Train to be an Instructor

If you want to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you'll need to be registered on the Driving Standards Agency's ADI register. The only exception to this is if you hold a trainee licence to give instruction, issued by the ADI Registrar.

Once registered as an ADI you may work for a Driving school, or become self employed and either take up a Franchise or become an Independent Instructor. Before starting out there are certain criteria which you must meet to take up this exciting career path. Firstly you must of held a full Driving Licence for four years and be aged 21 or over.

For futher details of the qualifying process please click on this link to read the DSA official guide.

You will have to have an enhanced criminal record check before applying to the ADI Registrar to start the qualifying process.

You can apply online or fill in a disclosure application form and send it to Capital Recruitment Vetting Service (CRVS) - one of the Driving Standards Agency's (DSA) criminal record checks contractors. To request a disclosure application form or details of how to apply online call the CRVS Helpline on Tel 0870 850 2455.

When you have returned this form, you will receive the disclosure report and reference number. You will need to put the disclosure reference number on your ADI 3 form when you apply to the DSA for registration as a PDI. You can do this online, or you can download the ADI 3 form from the Department for Transport website (PDF, 363K).

However, you should not obtain a disclosure if:
  • you have any endorsements - including disqualifications - or more than three fixed penalty points on your driving licence
  • you are only allowed to drive vehicles with an automatic transmission due to a disability
  • you have not held a full UK or European Union driving licence for four out of the last six years

If you fall into any of the above three categories, this may affect the way in which your application is processed.

You will need to give full details on your ADI 3 form when you submit it to the DSA. You will then be told when you should obtain a criminal record disclosure.

If you are applying to join the Register but live outside the United Kingdom, contact the DSA Criminal Records Team

Telephone 0121 556 5570. They will explain what additional information will be needed to assess your application.
